Creative Process
Robin Johnson has worked professionally in graphic design and print since 2002 and has specialized in book cover design since 2010. Her work is grounded in traditional design principles, typography, photo manipulation, compositing, color theory, visual storytelling, and years of experience working directly with authors and publishers.
THE DESIGN PROCESS
Every project begins with the story. Robin considers genre, audience, tone, character, setting, market expectations, series continuity, and the visual direction that will best communicate the book at a glance. From there, she develops the concept, builds the composition, refines the imagery, and creates the typography and finishing details that bring the cover together.
AN EVOLVING TOOLKIT
Robin works with a broad professional toolkit that may include licensed stock photography, professional design assets, photo manipulation, compositing, illustration, and newer generative or AI-assisted tools.
Rather than treating AI as the designer, Robin selectively delegates appropriate exploratory or production tasks to AI-assisted tools when they can improve efficiency, expand visual possibilities, or help develop imagery that may not be practical through stock photography alone. Creative direction, concept development, composition, typography, editing, refinement, and final design decisions remain in Robin’s hands.
YOUR PROJECT, YOUR PREFERENCES
Some clients welcome the full range of Robin’s creative tools, while others prefer a workflow limited to licensed stock photography and traditional design methods. If you have a preference regarding generative imagery, simply let Robin know at the beginning of your project.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Robin maintains formal training in modern AI tools. She holds certifications from the University of North Florida in AI for Work and Life and The Creator’s AI Foundation. This continuing education complements more than 20 years of professional design experience and supports thoughtful, responsible decisions about when newer technologies are appropriate within a creative project.
